Grmožur Fortress

About This Destination

Grmožur Fortress is located on an island of the same name in the north-western part of Lake Skadar. The fortress was built by the Turks in 1843 and captured by the Montenegrins in 1878. By decree of Prince Nikola, it was turned into a prison — known as the 'Montenegrin Alcatraz'.

The island is a permanent habitat for various bird species, and is particularly famous for its large flocks of pelicans that nest here. The fortress can only be reached by boat from Virpazar.

Combine your visit with a boat ride on Lake Skadar and a trip to Virpazar for an unforgettable day.
